Justice League by Keith Giffen & J.M. DeMatteis Omnibus Vol. 1
“Three decades ago Keith Giffen and J.M. DeMatteis took a League in wreckage and rebuilt it from the ground up. Their off-kilter, humor tinged adventures were immediately distinctive. Yet while the wacky one-liners and absurd hi-jinks retain their hilarity what really anchors these tales are Giffen and DeMatteis’ sense of character. Animosity Vol 2
“Animosity’s debut was one of the highlights of 2016 and the series has not lost any steam in 2017. Marguerite Bennett continues to balance sharp character work with world building that explores very pertinent social issues. Rafael de Latorre’s art captures these dual aspects of the narrative with emotion and imagination. This collection includes the recent #8 which mostly consists of the cast discussing their views on humans’ relation to animals and the connection of both to the divine. Bennett thoughtfully explores a variety of perspectives, resulting in one of the most varied, sensitive explorations of religion in comics in recent memory”

“Erik Burnham and Dan Schoening’s latest Ghostbusters collection brings the 2015 annual, the meeting of the classic GB and the Real GB, and the International mini series within its covers. Full of humor, globe trotting, dimension hopping, and ghosting busting, its well worth its $50 price tag”

Crime Destroyer #1 was the final published work of comics artist lifer Herb Trimpe before his untimely passing in 2015. With 90’s underground cartoonist Lawrence Hubbard on board, issue #2 promises to be a wild ride unlike any other”
Redlands #3

Agree on Redlands; I really enjoyed the first two issues and am looking forward to journeying deeper into this story . . .
While mayhaps not as high profile as in years past, there’s been some really cool Image debuts this year.
I feel like it has been a bit slower as far as new series from Image are concerned. A few have been good (Crosswind, Spy Seal, Peklis, Hard Rock Candy Mountain) but not outstanding. I didn’t stick with any of them more than two issues. Black Cloud started strong but flagged a little narrative-wise over the course of the arc. I’ll probably be back for more. Sacred Creatures was entirely unremarkable.
Of the top of my head, Redwood and Generation Gone are the only new Image series of the year which have really impressed me.

I do want to check out Minotaur at some point.
Forgot about Royal City. I was quite impressed with the first issue but by the time I read it, the first arc was nearly done. So, now that the trade’s out, I need to pick it up and catch up . . .
The comic I’m most excited about this week is BABYTEETH #5 (writer Donny Cates/artist Gary Brown, published by Aftershock). The creative team takes the horror trope of a demon baby born to an innocent mother, but ground the story with believable, sympathetic characters that you care about.
How is this Donny Crates fellow? Have you read Redneck?
I haven’t. Is it good? I’ve only read BABYTEETH and GOD COUNTRY, as well as ATOMAHAWK in HEAVY METAL, and I enjoyed them all. I also have not read THE PAYBACKS, although I seem to recall that Dean loved the series.
But BABYTEETH really has me hooked. It reminds me a lot of SAGA, in terms of the family dynamic and great characterization.
I read the first volume of The Paybacks and really enjoyed it. Would like to read more of Cates’ stuff, including Babyteeth, but haven’t had a chance yet . . .
I am planning to check out Doctor Strange when Cates takes over and makes Loki the new Sorcerer Supreme. Could be a fun, fresh twist on the character. Curious about his writing Thanos as well, but, my bar for that character is so high, I feel I’ll inevitably be disappointed . . .
I haven’t, that seems to be the Crates book that’s been the most successful. I’ll check out Baby Teeth when I get a chance.
ATOMAHAWK is out this week in a collected zero edition from Image, and while the series is a lot of fun (new adventures are currently serialized in IMAGE +), it’s not Cates’ strongest work, as the creative process involves the artist drawing whatever he feels like and Cates has to come in a script the story afterwards.

Good comics week. I really like Grass Kings quite a bit. Water colors are nice and the small mysterious isolated community storyline is compelling. I don’t really like Gaiman outside comics normally but both the American Gods TV show and the AG comic are very good. Star Trek Broken Mirror and Harrow County continue to be great.
This just in. Harvey Weinstein having been ousted from his own company dons the Green Goblin costume a la Norman Osborn (also ousted from his own company) and proceeds to Pumpkin Bomb all the peoples. It’s lucky we didn’t vote this guy in for President of the United States because voting for a super villain would be embarrassing to say the least.
