5 Questions with Ghostmann!

jgJ.G Jones is one of the premier comic book artists working in the business today. Known for his photo realistic style, his covers are the stuff of legend and a Jones cover alone can cause a comic to fly off the shelves. No stranger to interiors either, his work in Final Crisis, Wanted, and Before Watchman: The Comedian is highly detailed, expertly composed, and beautiful to behold. I will say though one of the crown jewels in his impressive profolio is the fifty two covers he did for the landmark DC Comics series “52“. Every week for one year his incredible covers graced the comic book shelves and made us all take notice of that ambitious series. Truly a wondrous achivement and has yet to be topped by any comic book artist out there.

Recently I had the chance to get together with J.G and ask him 5 questions. Let’s not waste anymore time and get to it!

“I Did It My Way!”

My dudes,

You may have noticed the lack of posts by yours truly over the last few weeks – well truth be told I just really don’t have time these days to properly run this awesome site, so therefore I am handing the Keys to the Kingdom to Alex and stepping away for awhile from NBC.

Am I quitting NBC?

Will I be posting articles?

Will I pop in every now and then and post a profane comment?

You better fucking believe it.

Will I one day return?

I want to thank you for making NBC the rad comic book site it has become. It has been such an incredible experience and I know the awesomeness will continue with Alex, Patrick, Josh, Cosmo, and Dean still kicking ass and taking names. I could not have done this without them.

See you in the funny books

And now, the end is near
And so I face the final curtain
My friend, I’ll say it clear
I’ll state my case, of which I’m certain
I’ve lived a life that’s full
I traveled each and every highway
And more, much more than this, I did it my way

Regrets, I’ve had a few
But then again, too few to mention
I did what I had to do and saw it through without exemption
I planned each charted course, each careful step along the byway
And more, much more than this, I did it my way

Yes, there were times, I’m sure you knew
When I bit off more than I could chew
But through it all, when there was doubt
I ate it up and spit it out
I faced it all and I stood tall and did it my way

I’ve loved, I’ve laughed and cried
I’ve had my fill, my share of losing
And now, as tears subside, I find it all so amusing
To think I did all that
And may I say, not in a shy way
Oh, no, oh, no, not me, I did it my way

For what is a man, what has he got?
If not himself, then he has naught
To say the things he truly feels and not the words of one who kneels
The record shows I took the blows and did it my way

Yes, it was my way

2720080-aaron_kuder_2_576If you have been reading DC Comics Action Comics for the last few months you may have noticed a new look for that book. Artist Aaron Kuder has come on board to bring his dynamic, highly stylized drawings to Superman’s world and the results so far have been mind-blowing awesome! I became an instant fan of Kuder’s work from the moment I laid eyes on one of his pages from Superman #20. Here is what I said of Kuder WAY back then in my iFanboy review of that issue, “Yeah, Kuder steals the show here in some pretty fantastic pages of the fight between Orion and Superman (the aircraft carrier page was glorious).

So when Aaron become the new artist on Action Comics I was thrilled and reached out to him to see if he wouldn’t mind answering a few fan-boy questions. To my delight he said yes (actually his real reply was, “Sure thing chicken wing.”)

So let’s get on with it!

DRAWING LINES! The Week in Review – 11/13/13

nbc_new2That’s right motherfucks, I’m back to swearing up a storm in this weeks Drawing Lines. After restraining myself from letting the expletives fly in last weeks post, I’ve decided this time to go all out – blitzkrieg style. That opening line there, you know the one about “Motherfuckin’ titty suckin‘” was something that my friends and I use to say back in grade school. We would have cussing competitions to see who could come up with the longest string of cuss words and still form a coherent sentence. Although I’m not sure how coherent “Two ball bitch” is, still it worked. It was like goddamn profane haiku – and my friends and I were masters. Funny thing is, as much as I swear and shit, I have this “switch” I can flip and turn off the cussing in an instant – which comes in handy around kids and my parents, who just wouldn’t understand what a “Ping pong pussy” was or just what “The dick don’t stop till the pussy goes flop.” means. Speaking of pussies, have you seen this weeks Freeze Frame? Funny shit my friends, funny shit. Oh and speaking of funny shit, check out these bullet points!

DRAWING LINES! The Week in Review 11/06/13

“… and I smile staring into your eyes and they are like kaleidoscopes spinning in snow.”

nbcOh man full disclosure this weeks Drawing Lines is being written like 30 minutes before I need to post it due to me being up all night with sick kids. You guys don’t know just how close you came to not getting a DL this morning. I’ve gotten maybe 2 hours sleep total and I think I’m starting to hallucinate and stuff…. is this a keyboard in front of me? What are these words I’m typing saying? Am I suppose to cuss or something? Perhaps since I’m in an altered state I’ll try out writing this post without using one single swear word! I know, sounds like a impossible feat doesn’t it? And to be honest I don’t even think i can do it, I mean me not using the F word is like a fish not using the ocean – it just IS. it is part of nature and the order of things. But gosh darn it dudes I’m gonna try, I’m really gonna try. Read on fearless readers and cheer me on on this rough Sunday morning – I’m gonna need it to get through these Bullet Points without using colorful language!

THE GHOST BOX! Quick Shot Reviews

portrait_incredibleAMAZING X-MEN #1: Battle of the Atom just about did me in on the X-Men. It took away all the charm for me and I had pretty much turned my back on the mutants and wished them well. But as you know im a sucker for first issues and really how could I not read a comic by Jason Aaron and Ed McGuinness? So with a certain amount of trepidation I read Amazing X-Men #1 and you know what? I’m back dudes! Back into the world of the the X-Men. This comic was great! No time traveling messes to try and figure out or any of that bullshit that Bendis has muddled things up with. Nothing but a solid story that singlehandly reinvigorates the X-Men universe after a mind numbing cross-over. Aaron seems like he is almost writing the very first X-Men story here – everything feels new and fresh and the characters are taken down to their core essence which at this moment in time is a stroke of brilliance. This allows new readers and old readers alike to enjoy this story as it should be. My Comic of the Week! WRITING: EXCELLENT / ART: EXCELLENT

DRAWING LINES! Week in Review 10/30/13

nbcHappy Thanksgiving! Well, at least in a few weeks. Yep November is here and its time to get ready to eat a shit load of food and lapse into a coma on the Lazy Boys and couches while watching that Star Wars marathon on the Spike Channel. its weird , even though I own like all 67 versions of the Star Wars trilogy, I cant help but watch The Empire Strikes Back when it’s on network television. And I’ll even get pissed at the commercials when they come on while watching it  – “Man come on! Not another commercial! Yoda was just about to bitch slap Luke into a being a motherfucking Jedi!” I do that same thing with Jaws, I cant help it I gotta support my favorite movies when they are on in TV. You know what else I support? Bullet Points! As Anakin Skywalker once said, “Yippee!”

“I vant to suck your blood!”
nbcHappy happy Halloween, Halloween, Halloween, happy happy Halloween, Silver Shamrock! Have you got your costumes ready yet? For the last few years I’ve been extremely lazy when it comes to dressing up – I just bought a Dracula cape and when the sun goes down on October 31st I throw it on over my cardigan sweater and skinny jeans and Wha-La! Instant Hipster Vampire! No messy make up to deal with afterwards, nothing to impair my vision or trip on, it’s the perfect solution. Okay, okay I suck at dressing up. I can’t pretend anymore. I’ve been living a lie and need to change my ways. Man, I really feel better talking to you about this and confronting my problems head on instead of hiding from them – I realize now its the first step to recovery. The only thing missing now are some bullet points to make my life even sweeter! Oh look! There they are!!!

THE GHOST BOX! Quick Shot Reviews

aug130714SEX CRIMINALS #2: This issue of Sex Criminals focuses on the  Y chromosome half of the criminals, Jon. As with issue #1 and Suzie, Matt Fraction covers Jon’s first experience with stopping time when he reaches orgasm – and also, as with the first issue, the results are fucking hilarious. The humor works here for two main reasons: one, the art by Chip Zdarsky is just what this comic needs to succeed in the realm of sexual perversity that it flirts with. His style is lighthearted enough to keep things in the arena of charactures but true enough to not slip into parody or slapstick. Dancing around the edges of pornography can be a tricky feat but it is handled with craftsmen-like precision here and the results are stunningly uncontroversial. The second reason this comic is funny as hell is Fraction knows that the majority of us have experienced these scenarios that Suzie and Jon are going through ( well, except for the whole stopping time thing) yeah, I can remember the first time I went into a video store to rent an “adult” movie. I was what, maybe 16 or 17 and hoped to god the rental clerk would just assume I was 18. I could relate to a lot of what Jon went through as kid and it brought back those funny memories and made me laugh – a lot. I am in love with this comic and I can’t recommend it enough. WRITING: EXCELLENT / ART: GREAT

5 Questions with Ghostmann!

Ales Kot

This weekend I had the extreme pleasure of presenting writer Ales Kot with a few questions about comics, music, TV and movies, and awesome leather jackets. You here at NBC know I’ve been championing Kot for awhile now, ever since the iFanboy days I was posting up reviews that “this Ales guy is writing the hell out of Suicide Squad and actually making me give a shit about this book“. It’s always a risk approaching creators whose work you respect and love, because what if they turn out to be an asshole? It can put a sour taste in your mouth towards their art. Thankfully Ales was the personification of grace and acceptance and over all just cool as hell. He was a complete joy to work with in this little Question & Answer we concocted together with the help of Facebook and gmail – I am honored that he devoted a window of opportunity to talk to a fan.
