Last month’s installment of The Omega Men was a difficult one. Since the beginning, writer Tom King has not shied away from brutal scenarios and impossible moral choices. #8, however, raised those stakes by not simply unveiling the sheer remorselessness of the ruling Citadel. King went further by giving the persecutors motives that could have been noble, if they had not been corrupted by their authoritative might. Thus where there could have been dialogue and mutual benefit there was wholesale slaughter. Yet still the worm turns. Standing midst the rubble, White Lantern Kyle Rayner is asked to turn his peace-keeping ring into a weapon of mass destruction and unleash it upon the enemy. What if “innocent” citizens die? So be it. The Holy Name of Omega blesses all. All of a sudden the heroes have lost a fair bit of their polish as well.
