About one year ago I started following a page on facebook called Professor Pit-bull. I figured hey I own a pit-bull, this will be cute. But the reality was anything but that. Prof Pit-bull turned out to be a page used to promote pit breed dogs on the New York City Animal Control euthanasia list within their shelter systems. Literally everyday they would have at least two dogs go up that were to die within 24 hours and those were just the Pit-bull breeds. Dig a little bit further and you’ll see dogs and cats of every age and breed put to death for nothing more then having the unfortunate luck of having owners that either couldn’t or wouldn’t take care of them. People are able to pledge money on the thread alerting followers of the dog on the euthanasia list to any rescue that would save the dog. The hope was for there to be enough donations pledged so that a rescue could save the dog. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. I’m a big softie for animals so I ended going in on these pledges pretty regularly much to the stress of my bank account. Around a year ago to this very day in fact I saw a dog name Monkey that broke my heart. I pledged $100, he got pulled and I didn’t even think much of it after that. But Monkey got pulled by Pibbles & More and that’s what made this instance different. Pibbles and More founder Salleena e-mailed me directly to thank me for my contribution. When I asked her how he was doing she sent me the picture below and informed me he was going into training. Most animal rescues don’t do this.
The death of animals by euthanasia right now is an epidemic. All over the United States innocent house pets are being killed simply because of neglect and ignorance. Monkey was a few hours from being killed. Now he is in that picture at the top of this story cuddling with his adopted sister. My current dog Ed could have been a victim of euthanasia as well but now he brings my family happiness everyday of our lives spent with him as well as almost everyone who meets him. It happens to hundreds of dogs and cats everyday where I live and work in New York City and Northern New Jersey and the scary thing is that it actually happens relatively less out here then in other parts of the United States. There are places where a dog or cat going to a shelter is a death sentence. Very few things hurt my heart worse than that. So I’m trying to do something about it and I’m asking you, the person reading this right now to help as well. Pibbles & More is a volunteer based 501c3 chairty rescue organization that pulls at risk animals from shelters in NY, NJ, PA, CT, NH, ME, VT, MA, MD and VT to find them loving homes. I don’t know if this is going to work, being truthful I’m really scared that it won’t. But I have a platform and I want to use it for something that’s important for me. I’m curious, do “animal lovers” in general feel the same love for all animals or just cute house pets? Like, do you guys protest the killing of cows, chickens, pigs, fish, etc., for the purposes of consumption? Are you guys vegetarian or vegan? If not, where is the line and how do you decide what falls on either side of it? How do we distinguish what animals are worthy of our pity and heroism? There seems to be a paradox lying in the center of many of the answers.
I think these are interesting, ethical questions with many philosophical applications. I’m curious to hear views from the best & brightest of the community. Thoughts anyone? Or too confusingly controversial?
For me personally I have a certain affliction for dogs because historically we’ve breed them to be animals that we take care of. They’ve evolved to the point that they are completely dependent on humans for survival. So when I see ones that are in unfortunate situations I see that as failure of the owners to take on the responsibility that we have towards them. Also it’s proven that dogs have close to identical emotional cognitive features to humans meaning they feel pain/sadness or happiness/joy same as us. The only problem for them is that they are dependent on humans to get the later but to often we leave them with the former. Like I said it’s something I’m passionate about. I don’t expect everybody to share the same passion but I have the means and opportunity to do something so I’m going to do it. As for other animals I do feel for them though not in the same way. I still eat meat although I feel awful about it. When I do eat animal products I try to make sure that it’s organic and hope that it was able to live out it’s life before being killed

I’ve read studies that suggest a great deal of animals experience a wide spectrum of emotions. Elephants, whales, dolphins, monkeys, apes just to name a few. They all feel pain, though. Have you ever seen footage of slaughterhouse practices. All of those animals appear anxious & terrified. I’m an avid meat eater (chef here), so I’m actually more concerned with what they feed these animals that is being passed on to children and people in general. Living conditions is also a point of contention because cramped up, anxious animals produce more toxins. Affects flavor.
It’s good to passionate about things. Because it’s important to you, I hope you save as many animals as you can.

Hate it. Think it’s messed up but to each his own. I spay and neuter my animals so it’s possible that makes me hypocritical but I do it for very different reasons, mainly because there are already too many dogs without homes to begin with and mine don’t need to make more.
It doesn’t make you hypocritical at all. It’s one of the most socially responsible things you can do concerning your pets. Euthanasia is such a big problem in part because people don’t take responsibility for their animals by spaying & neutering them. Especially in urban areas.
I can appreciate your using the site as an engine for your political agenda. Not taking advantage of all the tools at your disposal would be foolish.
I ask about cosmetic surgeries on pets because I find them unnecessary & unnatural. I am opposed. Likewise, I am opposed to unnecessary cosmetic surgeries on infants. Namely, circumcision. Luckily, circumcision for baby girls was outlawed in the States during the 90’s. Most people think circumcision in the States is so popular because of religious influence, when in fact it’s because of a man named Dr John Harvey Kellogg (yes, he was involved with the creation of Kelloggs Cereal) who thought little boys shouldn’t touch their penis’, so he devised that if you cut off the most sensitive part of the penis as an infant, boys wouldn’t be so inclined to masturbate as they grew older. SPOILER ALERT: It didn’t work and now sex is far less enjoyable for circumcised men. Circumcision is a barbaric practice that nobody even thinks twice about because that’s just what we’re used to. But don’t take my word for it. Google Dr Kellogg. It’s all in whatever color print you want.
That’s very interesting, I had no idea that was the reason for circumcision in non-Jewish people. You are 100% correct about getting your pet fixed. Obviously it helps keep the population under control so you end up with less unwanted pets but it also can also help prevent a lot of cancers and increase the life span of your animal.
Yeah I didn’t know that either. Very interesting. To tell the truth I got Sophie spayed & when I adopted Ed the humane society basically requires you to get him neutered or leave $500 deposit. Still would’ve done it anyway
That’s so rad. I had no idea. Bob Barker and I were born on the same day which makes sense because if I had his money I would probably use it the same way.
Spaying an neutering is very important; especially of roaming cats. Cats devastate native species; they are too good at hunting and wasteful as well. The numbers of birds and rodents they kill is in the millions annually in the USA easily.
For me, I’m concerned about animals suffering including shelter dogs and factory chickens but I’m most dismayed about species disappearing from the planet. An animal species just disappearing forever is horrible and all too common. Chinese and Vietnamese affluence are fueling a pseudo medicine seeking endangered species slaughter that WILL wipe out just about every sports team mascot species on the planet. Is it a coincidence that Indian animals numbers are better than east Asian animals numbers? Big cultural difference. Unfortunately this is an unwinable situation because borders are no longer a deterrent. There are bears killed in America for their gall bladders alone and entire families of elephants being killed right now for ivory alone; all for the Chinese medicine industry (they have a global reach).
I suppose that at least someone is trying to tackle some battles that can be won; saving some of these dogs and cats.
Enter Yao Ming
I was a big Yao fan. Loved his game (him and Hakeem Olajuwon are my two favorite all time centers). I was sad for him to have had years of shortened seasons and surgeries and ultimately a career ending bone injury. It’s cool that he is trying to turn this around. I assume that this will fall on mostly def ears though. I watched a documentary recently that interviewed rich Vietnamese guys that had evidence put right in front of their face that proved that Rhino Horn was useless and they said on camera that we don’t really care anyway because just using the powdered horn is a status symbol (and the more endangered the animal the more of a status symbol it is).
You know it takes continuous pushing but it can make a difference. Thankfully Yao is a dude that can do something. I have this fantasy about starting a really militant organization to protect those animals in Africa from poachers but I doubt that would ever happen.
Ha! We both have that same fantasy. It is actually a dangerous job to be a park ranger in Africa. They get killed pretty regularly; and I’m pretty sure they occasionally kill poachers too. I also feel sorry for the poor Africans that poach or burn trees to make char coal because the money and poverty is too much of a driving factor but rich people have no need to buy this stuff.
Yao will help but normally these things take 50 or 100 years to change a society and the animals don’t have that kind of time. Most Chinese will see the light eventually but when is the question.
In general I feel empathy for all animals. I’ve had dogs and cats for pets ( I currently have ferrets) but my heart sinks whenever I drive on the road and see a dead squirrel, possum or raccoon. From my point of view they are all living creatures and it’s sad to see a life ended in such a tragic way.
Like Patrick I eat meat but feel horrible about it. I try to eat seafood whenever possible and avoid eating mammals as much as possible. I actually eat vegetarian once or twice a week to cut back on meat consumption. There are a lot of good vegetarian dishes out there and its a little easier these days with more companies offering a variety of choices in the frozen food aisle. In the end, animals do eat other animals in the wild and humans are still animals at the core which is how I rationale it when I do consume meat. But I haven’t had a steak in years and it’s mostly chicken when I do eat meat.
I actually eat quite a bit of vegetarian & vegan dishes/meals despite being a self-professed “avid meat eater”. I believe in balance. There’s actually quite a few vegan eateries in my area. I’m particularly hardcore about vegan desserts and baked goods. Not only are they healthier, but I think they taste superior as well. Thanks for the feedback. 🙂
Also, I fully agree with you about us being animals and in nature animals eat animals. That’s how I justify my flesh eating habits. That and the proteins from meat, particularly fish, helped develop man’s brain through the evolutionary process, catapulting us to the top of the food chain. Hunting also put an emphasis on tool creation and/or technology.
I mentioned this in another thread but I switched to vegetarian about a year and half ago. I have always been an animal lover having pets growing up and was against hunting but at the same time enjoyed eating meat but didn’t really link the two positions together until a few years ago. My original justification to being anti-hunting and pro-farmed meat was that humans controlled the creation of the farmed animals and they wouldn’t live without us breeding them where as wild animals would get along just fine, or better, without us. I was fine with this rationale until more and more stories came to light about the abuse that animals suffer in factory farming operations that swayed my opinion that it was a generally bad idea to have any type of animal become a consumer product because the first thing to go in the name of profit is the welfare of the animals under their care.
There is also the negative environmental effects that meat consumption drives, especially beef production. I have thought of becoming vegan but I think for now I am going to spend some time getting a handle on the vegetarian diet then maybe progress. But to be honest with you, I don’t feel any better or any worse health-wise since switching and it’s not a hard as you think 🙂
Food in general as a consumer product pushed onto us by the corporate machine is a blundering, terrible idea. In the interest of maximum profits, quality goes right out the window. They purchase the cheapest ingredients and inject tons of salt/sodium, fats, sugar and preservatives to make it taste “good” or at least edible. So many of these processed foods have absolutely zero nutritional value. But it’s easy and cheap and what the fuck are poor people to do about, particularly when they aren’t educated to know any better. It’s a tough situation.
And you are completely right, there are so many negative effects that the beef industry have on the environment. That’s the one that makes me consider changing my diet.

Of course! I enjoy the conversation. I think if people thought about these kinds of things attitudes would change. But with how stressful normal life is and how individualistic our, or at least my, community is, no one thinks about the impact their actions have on the rest of the world.

HEY, for all the animal lovers out there I recommend three really good graphic novels. “Blacksad” and “Grandville”; two detectives who just happened to be rendered with animal faces. Also “Mouse Guard” has incredible art work with some compelling writing. Some of the art work on these three is really special.
