Tarnished Reps

Since late 2017, sexual harassment has been dominating cultural discussion in Hollywood and the media. Men are using their positions of power to exploit women and cover up heinous acts. Unfortunately, the comic industry is not immune to this, and has been hit with a string of high-profile incidents.

Is Disney becoming Alchemax?

disneyhercules

I tried playing a mental game last week, where charted the companies that own DC Comics upwards to the top. It went DC Comics, DC Entertainment, Warner Brothers, Time Warner, and possibly AT&T in the future. Of course I got all this wrong without the help of the internet, but I did it to illustrate how hard its become to track where our media is coming from. That becomes important because increasingly, its changing in absurd ways and everyone wants your web cookies so they can predict what you will buy next week or even next month. Take that same game that I started with, and do it with Marvel Entertainment/Lucas Films/Pixar/ and Disney. Now add 21st Century Fox to that list. It’s not a linear thread, its a spider web. One which is about to become twice as big… Continue reading Is Disney becoming Alchemax?

What else to say about Watchmen?

WatchmenMoviePoster

We live in a world where cinematic universes are in vogue, comic book shows are more prevalent than ever, and the Avengers roster are household names. We’ve even had a Watchmen adaptation, much as we might prefer to forget about it. It was as faithful as any movie adaptation could be, but seemed to lack the essence of the graphic novel’s themes. DC’s various prequel series, Before Watchmen, also seemed like a squandered opportunity if not one that was sacrilegious. Aside from two or three of the mini series, most were OK and the rest were flat out awful. It’s this legacy that pushed the property out of my mind since. Politics aren’t Killing Marvel Comics, But Marvel’s Politics are

InhumansRoyalFamily

It’s almost common knowledge by now that Marvel Entertainment (the branch that oversees the comics, not Marvel Studios which produces the films) is in dire straits in the direct market. There is no single reason why, rather its a collective list of issues such as price and over-saturation of product. The scapegoat of diversity has been heavily criticized as well as unproven, Marvel Comics across the board are struggling with Amazing Spider-Man #789 the only Marvel comic making it into the top ten of a limited survey sample of comic shops across the nation in October.

AshWilliams

In honor of Halloween, I wanted to look back at one of my favorite (and most enduring) horror franchises, Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead/Army of Darkness and its hero Ash Williams.

Splitting Hairs, and Revenue Streams

MillarWorld

Steaming giant Netflix and corporate powerhouse Disney are ending their business together as Netflix acquires Mark Millar’s company Millarworld. Will more options equal more competition, and thus better options for folks looking to binge-watch their entertainment? Continue reading Splitting Hairs, and Revenue Streams

Trouble in Mid-Guard;The Path to the Dark Tower

The_Dark_Tower_teaser_poster

Stephen King’s epic fantasy tale of Roland Deschain and his quest for the Dark Tower has finally escaped from development hell and has made its way to theaters. It joins other adaptations of King’s novels, but is perhaps be the most crucial one yet. The eight Dark Tower novels connect to many of King’s other works, including, but not limited to: The Stand, It, The Shining, Desperation, The Regulators, Salem’s Lot & Christine. With this film possibly being the first of many sequels (and a prequel TV series), the pressure is on for it to be a hit… Continue reading Trouble in Mid-Guard;The Path to the Dark Tower

Mask of the Phantasm, A Legacy And Shadow On The DC Animated Universe

BatmanMaskPhantasm

Batman: The Animated Series and its role as the starting point for the DC Animated Universe are well-known and fondly remembered by its fans. Decades later, the various shows that formed the DCAU have ended while others have come and gone. Even now, fans are more concerned with DC’s live action interconnected film universe and the next movie starring Ben Affleck’s as the Caped Crusader than what was done more than twenty years earlier, despite its superior quality. For example, the first DCAU movie set in the same realm as Batman: The Animated Series, Mask of the Phantasm…
