Since late 2017, sexual harassment has been dominating cultural discussion in Hollywood and the media. Men are using their positions of power to exploit women and cover up heinous acts. Unfortunately, the comic industry is not immune to this, and has been hit with a string of high-profile incidents.

I tried playing a mental game last week, where charted the companies that own DC Comics upwards to the top. It went DC Comics, DC Entertainment, Warner Brothers, Time Warner, and possibly AT&T in the future. Of course I got all this wrong without the help of the internet, but I did it to illustrate how hard its become to track where our media is coming from. That becomes important because increasingly, its changing in absurd ways and everyone wants your web cookies so they can predict what you will buy next week or even next month. What else to say about Watchmen?

We live in a world where cinematic universes are in vogue, comic book shows are more prevalent than ever, and the Avengers roster are household names. We’ve even had a Watchmen adaptation, much as we might prefer to forget about it. It was as faithful as any movie adaptation could be, but seemed to lack the essence of the graphic novel’s themes. DC’s various prequel series, Before Watchmen, also seemed like a squandered opportunity if not one that was sacrilegious. Aside from two or three of the mini series, most were OK and the rest were flat out awful. It’s this legacy that pushed the property out of my mind since.

Politics aren’t Killing Marvel Comics, But Marvel’s Politics are

It’s almost common knowledge by now that Marvel Entertainment (the branch that oversees the comics, not Marvel Studios which produces the films) is in dire straits in the direct market. There is no single reason why, rather its a collective list of issues such as price and over-saturation of product. The scapegoat of diversity has been heavily criticized as well as unproven, Marvel Comics across the board are struggling with Amazing Spider-Man #789 the only Marvel comic making it into the top ten of a limited survey sample of comic shops across the nation in October.
