DC Comics had a slew of announcements in regards to Young Animal & Vertigo. The previously announced Young Animal/DC Crossovers will be called Milk Wars and feature crossovers of Shade with Wonder Woman, Mother Panic with Batman (naturally) & Cave Carson with Swamp Thing, in addition to the previously announced Doom Patrol/Justice League crossover. In addition, writer Magdalene Visaggio of Kim & Kim and Quantum Teens are GO will team with artist Sonny Liew of The Art of Charlie Chan Hock Chye, The Shadow Hero & Liquid City for an Eternity Girl title through Young Animal. Vertigo also announced two new series in correspondence with their 25th Anniversary. Those are Motherlands by writer Si Spurrier (Cry Havoc, The Spire) and artist Rachael Stott (Dr Who, Star Trek) and Deathbed by writer Joshua Williamson (The Flash, Birthright) & artist Riley Rossmo (Batman, Constantine The Hellblazer) More details at Comics Beat

Like Marvel comics has had before them, today I’m taking a look at the new DC Comics Rebirth lineup of titles announced last weekend. DC Comics attempted to reboot in the summer of 2011 with their New 52 initiative. Though initially successful, readers quickly tired of the redundant writing & art styles that was often overtly in your face with little substance and dated concepts, while creative talent left the books in droves over accusations of overreaching editorial mandates. In 2015, the publisher began walking away from the concept; first with their Convergence event whose story was used to reestablish the Multiverse and then the DC You initiative, a sincere attempt to diversify the style and creative talent on their line of books. In spite of some really great comics, DC You failed to reestablish the publisher’s already shrinking market share while the one two punch of Star Wars & Secret Wars allowed chief competitor Marvel Comics to dominate the direct market. During WonderCon 2016, DC Comics announced another new initiative with a relaunch of the publishers comics with new #1’s and creative teams for their series of titles. Some look great, some of the creators brought in during DC You have leveled up, some familiar faces are sticking around, some new writers have been brought into the fold and some comics vet’s are returning after years away from the publisher. Some books look great, some have potential, some look kind of bland and some look like hot garbage. Will divide the contenders from the pretenders with Yay, Mayhaps or Nay. As always, remember that not even all of the creative teams have been announced let alone all the possible series so this lineup is subject to change.
Writer Joshua Williamson of Illuminati, Birthright & Nailbiter will team with artist Jorge Coelho of Siege, John Flood & Zero for a comic based on Disney’s Haunted Mansion property at Marvel. More details at Entertainment Weekly
Fall is upon us but while Secret Wars and it’s many tie in’s sit in delay purgatory for the time being, Marvel is once again relaunching it’s superhero line with a whole bunch of #1 issues for their comics. With that said, the publisher is moving from a different position than they were in with Marvel Now & All New Marvel Now. With the former, Marvel had a lot of young creative talent that they were able to re-position during the relaunch to give their line a fresh make over and give creators they had brought up on their lower tier titles a higher profile like Jonathan Hickman, Jerome Opena, Esad Ribic, Kelly Sue DeConnick, Jason Aaron or Rick Remender. After Marvel Now was a success, they added several new talents into their fold by building off the success of the original relaunch, giving creators like Ales Kot, Tradd Moore, Michael Walsh, Felipe Smith or Michel Fiffe their first shot at a major comics launch with the publisher. Now, much of the talent from both those initiatives has moved on from the publisher. In their place, Marvel has new creators coming on from all sorts of different mediums in addition to some of their old standby’s like Brian Michael Bendis, Mark Waid or Greg Land, and they are publishing a lot of comics. Probably too many. Below is a list of all the announced new series categorized into grouping of Yay, Mayhaps or Nah like we did with Secret Wars. Keep in mind that I won’t be including series that are basically the same creative talent and that Marvel will surely have more books to announce in the months ahead.
